Someone out there is smarter than you.
Someone is more successful.
Someone earns more money.
Someone has better grades, a better career, a bigger audience, or more experience.
And that’s okay.
The problem isn’t that other people are doing well.
The problem is when their success makes you forget your own progress.
We live in a world where we’re constantly exposed to other people’s highlights.
We see promotions but not the years of rejection.
We see confidence but not the self-doubt.
We see achievements but not the failures that came before them.
As a result, it’s easy to look at someone else’s destination and feel discouraged about where you are.
I’ve done this countless times.
I’ve looked at people who seemed far ahead of me and wondered whether I was moving too slowly.
But then I realized something important:
Everyone is running a different race.
Some people start with advantages.
Some people discover their passion earlier.
Some people have more support, resources, or opportunities.
And some people simply started before you did.
Their journey is not your measuring stick.
Your only job is to become a little better than the person you were yesterday.
Growth becomes much easier when you stop competing with everyone else and start competing with your past self.
Instead of asking:
“Why am I not as successful as them?”
Ask:
“Am I making progress compared to where I was six months ago?”
Maybe you’re more disciplined.
Maybe you’re studying more consistently.
Maybe you’re managing your time better.
Maybe you’re finally believing in yourself.
Those changes matter.
Progress isn’t always dramatic.
Sometimes it’s invisible.
Sometimes it looks like showing up when nobody notices.
Sometimes it looks like trying again after failing.
Sometimes it looks like refusing to quit.
The people you admire today were once beginners too.
They had their own Chapter 1.
Their own mistakes.
Their own uncertainty.
Their own moments when they felt behind.
What separated them wasn’t perfection.
It was persistence.
So if you feel behind right now, remember this:
You don’t need to be ahead of everyone else.
You only need to keep moving forward.
Your journey doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s to be meaningful.
Keep learning.
Keep growing.
Keep writing your story.
One chapter at a time.
